I am an emeritus professor of journalism at Franklin College and a weekly columnist for the Winchester News Gazette of Randolph County, Indiana. My first article and database of hazing deaths appeared in Human Behavior magazine in 1978.

Short Theater Plays on hazing:  The Broken Pledge (fraternity hazing) and Death of a Rookie (athlete hazing).

Freelance columns.  This one is on hazing deaths occurring in 2021. Another is on the end of Greek life at Bloomsburg University. This one exposes embezzlement of a former executive director at the Clery Center.

Honors and awards: SUNY Buffalo State College honorary doctorate (2006) and outstanding alumnus (1999); Ball State University School of Journalism Hall of Fame (2010), and member of Phi Kappa Phi and Alpha Lambda Delta national academic honor societies.

Recent publications: Journalism shield laws in SPJ’s The Quill, an investigation into sexual predator E. W. Johnson, Tom Wolfe’s New Journalism co-editor; and nonfiction essays in the 2020, 2021, 2022 Limberlost Review issues.

Recent book reviews: Western American Literature book review (March 2022) and Phi Kappa Phi national honor society’s Forum magazine (June 2022).

I also have interviewed numerous authors for journals and  book collections. The authors include Kurt Vonnegut, David Mamet, Maurice Sendak, James Dickey,  Jim Harrison, etc.

I am a member of IRE (Investigative Reporters & Editors), SPJ (Society of Professional Journalists), and Phi Kappa Phi National Academic Honor Society. My earned master’s degree is from New Mexico Highlands University. I was awarded a formal doctoral equivalency from Ball State University in 1988 to enable me to teach graduate school classes. I have additional coursework from Hamline University (creative writing), the University of Bridgeport Shakespeare Institute and Nevada-Reno. I revived an out-of-print art and literary magazine called Brushfire at UNR, serving as its co-editor. I also served as editor-in-chief of Arts Indiana magazine and as visiting associate professor in English and journalism at the University of Richmond.

My hobby is collecting international postage stamps of journalists and authors.
